    The name "Immanuel"
Would it be considered blasphemous or sacriligeous if someone gave their child the name "Immanuel" either as a first or middle name?

Considering that this is one of the names of Jesus and is translated as "God with us," would it be wrong to give a name like that to a human with a sin nature?

Well, I do believe Jesus was the Son of God and our Savior. That's why I posed the question.

    And I meant this:

The name will offend some, but no matter what we do, we offend people at times.

I wasn't meaning to sound flippant, but this is really something you need to reconcile personally.

As Chuck mentions, whatever name you chose could offend anyone, such are the times we live in.

There are males named Joshua and Jesus. A man running for mayor of Chicago is Rahm Israel Emanuel. Manny, the pre-teen character on Modern Family, is probably Immanuel. I know many Catholic women named Mary.

And no matter what you name the child, he/she will be nicknamed by his/her classmates -- Fairy Mary/Hairy Mary/Merry Mary/Don't Marry Mary, etc. My son Jeremy was called Germany and Germy. Ya can't win.

There's nothing wrong with naming a child after someone like Jesus, whether you call him Joshua, Jesus or Emmanuel. It's an act of respect, clearly, so there's really no way it can be blasphemy. If it was blasphemy to do such things, there wouldn't be anybody in the world named Mohammed. But it's the most common boy's name on earth, because it's just the opposite. It's an act of praise. Go for it.
