What size wire do I need for a 60 amp breaker running 50' to power a plasma cutter?
I am running a cable wire with no conduit 50 feet from the panel box. I have heard some say 6 gauge is OK where I want to buy the cable they are telling me 4 gauge.

Just curious, TK is rarely incorrect on things, so I am wondering about the thinking behind #4cu.

#6cu in NM or SE cable must use the 60 deg C column in 310.16.
In this column #6 is rated for 55A. Since there is no 55A breaker we can round up to 60A.
Unless the actual full load is 56-60A I would say #6cu is fine.

If manufacturer is recommending a 60 amp breaker, I would assume unit takes more then 50 amps to start and run.

I am not an electrician, but agree with TK. Use #4 copper.

Sorry. I hit the agree button instead of the quote button. No big deal.

This is fine, but what do you base it on?
Even if it takes 90A to start, this is figured into the equation. Like I said, if the running amps are under 56 than #6 will be fine. At only 50' the distance is not at a consideration.

Knowing that TK certainly knows what he is talking about I was just curious as to why he suggests #4.
