    My experience is nothing where you need inventory. I started a business on less than $1000. If you have a skill or service, all you need is one month's rent and office supplies. That won't help you open a Walmart though. A tax ID number is free and with a name you are officially a business. The rest is up to you. You also have the work at home or internet route. If you still not sure there are a lot of good books that talk about government help and also ideas for business. The Free Money series may give you some ideas.
