    Washing Machine Drain
I currently have a top-loading washer that drains into a utility sink, which I understand to be permitted by code. I was wondering if there is a permissible way to drain the washer under the utility sink (perhaps by having the washer discharge hose connect to the sink drain or by having a washer standpipe that makes a wye connection with the sink drain).

    Any thoughts?

The reason I'd like to do this is purely aesthetic -- I don't like seeing the washer discharge hose in the sink. If my plan above won't work, are there other ways to avoid having the washer discharge hose in the sink?

    Thanks!

    Sorry David,

The washer hose MUST be above the flood rim of the washer to work correctly. Your way would drain the water out as fast as it came in. Regards, Tom

    Thanks for your quick response!

Was my second suggestion (having the washer standpipe connect into the sink drain) feasible? It avoids the flood rim issue, but I'm concerned about narrowing the 2" standpipe into the 1 1/2" drain. On the other hand, any water that couldn't drain quickly enough would presumably come up into the sink. Is that code-compliant (at least as a general matter, not necessarily locally)? Is it a bad idea?

    Thanks!

One more piece of information -- I looked at the manual for my Bosch washer (why didn't I think of that before? :D ) and the installation instructions show the option of connecting to a "siphon" under the sink. In the diagram, it looks like a "tee" connection, and it also appears that the height of the tee connection isn't an issue.
