    Basically, you break the numbers down into their prime factors:

    36 = 3 x 3 x 2 x 2
    24 = 3 x 2 x 2 x 2

    Take the factors that are the same (in common), 3 x 2 x 2 = 12

    The greatest common factor is, therefore, 12.
