Genetics do play a role for sure, but I believe more importantly is the way you live your life. If you smoke, use drugs, more than moderate alcohol, diet rich in fatty foods, and live a sedentary lifestyle these will play a much more significant role in your chances of developing heart disease.

Genetics provide important clues, but, of equal importance, so does lifestyle. Did your grandfather eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise? Was/is your grandfather and grandmother overweight? Is your dad overweight, does he smoke, does he have high cholesterol? What about your uncle? You can't control your genetics, but, weight, smoking, activity, and cholesterol levels are things you can control.

Since you have a strong family history of heart disease, you should start now on a heart healthy lifestyle. You might be able to avoid all the problems your grandparents and dad and uncle have had.

Check with your doctor. Eat a diet high in Fruits and Vegetables, Whole Grains, and Nuts. Don't eat anything with trans fats. Don't eat meat every day and on the days that you do, eat meat sparingly. Be sure to get plenty of exercise, walking counts.
