Yipes!
AOSmithmotors are in TN (800) 672-6495. Give them a call.
Ask them specifically which capacitor wire Brn or Brn/wht is the same as the Black or the yellow line wire?
Tell them, you cannot find the info on their website. A.O.Smith Electrical Products Company
One of the brn or brn/wht wires you will not be using.
With a good ohmmeter, you should be able to tell as well.
The nameplate may also show it. Can you post a picture of the nameplate?

Low, like a few ohms or less. One very low. Lead resistance can be a problem too.

FYI: This is what AO Smith said: "To change to a 3-wire hook-up: The brown/white wire and yellow wire are connected together internally. As a result, you need to cap off the brown/white lead and connect the yellow lead to the capacitor. Yellow is the line lead."

I assumed you didn't own a multimeter. So, you got two ways to solve the same problem. That motor has come up before on AMHD and it was difficult then to get information from AO Smith's website.
Like the old saying goes "More than one way to skin a cat".

So czadna, I have the same situation: replacing a three wire A.O. Smith with a four wire. Point of clarification: do you mean I should connect yellow to the brown&white, or they are already connected internally, and I should leave brown&while off the wiring, and just use yellow for the power and capacitor like red was in my original installation?

I have a Lennox Heating & Colling furnace which needs a new blower motor. Is it difficult to install and are there any specifics I need to be aware? I know I should turn off the power and circuit to the furnace, screw the new motor in, match the color coded wires. Is there anything I should do...
Fan motor hums after installation.
[ 1 Answers ]
My son and I installed a new Hunter ceiling fan and it made a humming sound when power was turned on. We know that it is not a defective motor because we took the fan down and put it in another room and it made no noise. We installed the same model Hunter fan (new) in the original location and it...
