How much does it cost to convert gas heating to electric. Do u need a whole new furnace or can the old one be changed over

You just can't convert a gas furnace to an electric furnace. You will need a brand new electric unit.

Another thing to consider is the power requirements. How many amp service do you have in your panel. You will probably have to upgrade.

You need to have someone at the power company give you report on what it would cost you to run the electric furnace compared to the gas furnace and then do the same at the gas company. Then after you compare these you can start getting figures on how much to install each kind. And like twinkerdotter said find out about your electric system changing it could cost you up $1,000 or more.

The answer to your question about switching a unit from one to the other is impossible, it would take a new furnace.

Simple answer: you need a new furnace. If you want to know what to expect for operational costs please post your current gas furnace's size, AFUE (or model number), and your KWH cost including taxes, and we can give you the calculations.

Not too many places where electric is cheaper to heat with than natural gas. Why are you considering this?

You can convert a gas furnace to electric I had mine done last year , it normally cost around 300 as long as you have amp service and a box already installed to back the extra needed to do this ,you need to call a local electrician and they can get you where you need to be .

Fofire, I think you are mistaken,a gas furnace CANNOT be converted to eletric. I guess you could always add a bank of heatstrips to the exterior of the furnace, but it can't be converted.

My furnace was natural gas last year when we bought the house we paid an electrician to come over and he did whatever it was looked like he gutted it and now it is electric we did not buy a new furnace he did it right were it was already installed , so had I not been witness to this I would not say it could be done.

I believe you but I am surprised that some electrician was so stupid to do something like you mentioned. A natural gas furnace is a UL/CSA listed piece of equipment. It is listed for only one thing and that is to be a gas furnace. By converting the gas furnace to an electric furnace the listing was violated.

With that fact being said the electrician has caused you a great problem or harm. Since your existing unit was modified the unit is no longer listed. Since it is no longer listed it is almost a sure bet that your homeowners insurance will not cover you in case of fire or other damages caused by your modified furnace. If you doubt my word give your insurance carrier a call and tell them what was done. It is very sad when people like you are taken advantage of by nonprofessional people like your electrician.

I just wanted to clear the air here on this subject so no one else who reads this thread will make the same mistake you did and have there furnace illegally converted.
