I went to:

192.168.2.1

I have the following options under the security settings:
WPA- Pre-Shared Key
WPA-RADIUS
WEP

I tried WEP and I restarted my computer but no longer had access to the internet; I tried to connect but it said something about the settings not allowing me to connect to it.

Hope you can help.

NOTE: Router had a previous owner; I have no disk to go with it only the router and the Ethernet cable.

Try disabling WEP, Then verify the Key.

It is disabled.

I'm able to access the internet now-- however, it's still not secure

You need to go to the Wireless option not the Security option
(the Wireless is right before the Security settings)
-Now you click on Wireless Security (2nd one in)

Setup as WPA2 Personal - security mode
WPA Algorithims - TKIP+AES
-it should assign a WPA shared key for you

Click save settings

Now when another computer finds the wireless connection, it will ask for the PW (WPA shared key)
-enter the one that was provided for you

This is easiest way that I have found and it works

It does not say that.

It only says what I've mentioned above.

Can you post a screenshot, but right next to where you see disabled there should be a small down arrow that gives you options to change to :

Disable
WPA personal
WPA Enterprise
WPA2 Personal
Radius and WEP

If not, what model router and firmware version (upper right corner)

Unfortunately, it only gives me those three options.

When clicking the disable bar it only gives you the options I previously mentioned.

Hope that helps out, just take time and go step by step, it took me awhile when I first got my router but eventually figured out what worked for myself - personally I do not touch or go to any other settings, just setup the PW and left rest alone.

Router I am using is WRT54G2 so out settings are a little different

Hope you get this figured out, as mentioned, just take your time and re-read as many times as it may take

If you really want to make your network secure without worrying about the passwords there is a way to do it .

Get the physical address (mac address) of your wireless network connection/ adapter
Write it down on a piece of paper.

On the router interface, go to the wireless mac filter tab (next to wireless security)
Make sure its enabled and its set to "allow" pcs listed below to connect
Then edit the mac filter list and add your mac address there.

This will filter every computer trying to connect to your wireless network so even if it broadcasts an unsecured network , anyone who tries to connect will get an error message "windows is unable to connect"..

Call Linksys tech support 8003267114 they're great and can assist you with that feature easily

Well I tried.

I ended up doing something to my router- eek. It was unable to connect and now it goes on and off.

I really don't want to spend money on some tech guy but maybe I'll have to.

It really just sounds like you entered in the wrong key.

Tip: when things get FUBARd, there's a reset button on the back of the router, push it in with a pen-tip and hold it for about five seconds. It restores the factory default settings. With a wired connection, login to your router using the original credentials you had when you logged in the first time. This is really all you need to do.

On a side note WEP is useless, it's easily crackable, so don't bother using it, WPA2 is your best option. Other steps are disable SSID broadcasting and like that poster mentioned, use MAC address filtering.

Windows' default network manager sucks. It makes a simple process stupid-hard with that connection wizard demon. You're best bet is to go to your wireless card manufacturer's website, most likely Intel or Broadcom, and download their network manager. At any rate, three routers later my theory proves to be true.

Lastly, and I don't know why this is, but with my experience with Linksys routers, they seem to have a shelf life of about four years. The only logical explanation is a service change on our ISPs end but I'm not sure how that would affect an internal device.

When I buy my condo, I'm installing a central, 16-port switch, I've had enough of wireless internet.

To do a screen shot, look at your keyboard where it says prtsc? OK with the page you wish to copy showing press that key then go to the question box and click paste. (you may have to go advanced to do this) it should appear.. by the way if you get locked out of your router you can get back in by using a ethernet cable to direct connect and change settings. If you set a wep key it has to also be added in the computer or laptop that you wish to get on the internet in order to connect. (wirelessly) if you are connecting using wired all the time then you can just turn off the wireless feature of your router.

Well thanks everyone for your help.. and patience.

Unfortunately I ended up calling Linksys and having the tech guy do all the work for me. Forty bucks down the drain but I'm covered for 6 months ;)
