    Software Distribution Service
I use AOL and have AVG loaded on my computer. I keep getting booted offline and then the computer says "Software Distribution Service" has been installed.

What is that and how do I stop it?

Apparently it cannot run with AVG - ?

I DO get the message about downloading now or later and I also hit cancel but that appears to be for an AOL download.

I hate AOL (nuff said about that topic) so it does not surprise me that you would have some sort of alien software embedded in your hard drive.

You need to run a good Norton Internet security. Nothing gets past Norton Internet safety. AVG is okay and all but I had used it and then ended up deleting it as it was junk.

I buy the 2009 Norton Internet Security disc online for about $18 and $4 shipping. Can't beat that. Best money I've ever spent and with a disc I get each year I don't get any "stale" program updates. There is a huge difference between 2008 and 2009 version of this software.

When you have AOL you have to "get ahead" of the b*stards.

Just my 2 cents as usual.

    Norton Internet Security 2009

Here is what I get from these folks. I don't renew online with Norton but go back to these folks and get a brand new disc for the next year's net surfing fun.

Try going to add/remove programs and uninstall

-Turn off your automatic updates for MS
-Go to ms update link and look at what updates are offered
-uncheck the "Software Distribution Service" and choose not to show this update in future updates

Basically, do not allow this update to be installed from MS

That's what I need to do, turn off the automatic updates.

    How?

    Assuming you are using XP

    Control panel
    -Automatic Updates icon
Put mark in the one that says: Turn off automatic updates and click Apply
