    De-tax four tourists
    Hello,

My husband and I are going to New York in August for a vacation. It's our second visit to the US, and however we don't know about the de-tax procedures of non residents. We were in Washington last year and we've been told that we should have made a special card at the airport so we don't pay taxes when we shop.

What are the procedures for New York city? Should we ask for a "card" or any kind of paper at the airport? Or do the shops in New York ask for our ID and when they see we're non residents they exempt us from paying the taxes?

    Thank you

There is no such provision in the U.S. You will pay sales tax.

Oh it's not like in Europe?? Tourists are exempted from taxes. They present their bills at the airport when leaving and they get a tax-return.

There IS a process to do this at the Mexican and Canadian borders, but I do not know how it would be done at the NY airports.

A check of the NY airport websites may provide the needed information.
