    What is the significance of the ecliptis
    Can anyone please explain what the significance of the ecliptic for me.

    The ecliptic is the path that the sun traces out over the course of the year. Early astronomers used this path as the reference plane for their star co-ordinate systems, but now equatorial co-ordinates (with the reference plane of the Earth's equator) are much more popular.
