Windows Xp Expressing Very Slow System
    Hello All.

Sorry if I seem a little stupid.

Recently My Windows and generally anyhting running on it has slowed down conciderable. I have tried the idea of deleteing various programmes that are not necessary and running anti virus and anti spyware. I have also defreged Both drives and run a registry cleaner.

Im sorry I don't know what type of information you would want to see, but if you need any just ask.

I would like some new ideas if anyone has any

    Thank you very much.

    Lloyd

Download a utility called 'procmon' from Microsoft and see what is eatting up your CPU cycles. Additionally, removing items from your memory resident startup could speed things up. Try 'hijackthis' it's free.

Personally I would delete everything you don't need on your comp, just be careful what you delete though.

Then I would run a full virus scan with a good program like Avast, then I'd used a cleaner like CCleaner, then use a good defragger like IObit Smart Defragger and click "Deep Optimize".

Then see how your comp is running.

    CCleaner - Download

Defragment Disk | Smart Defrag | Free Disk Defragmenter Download

Remove the bittottrent client and you should notice an increase in speed.
Removing it completely from Add/Remove programs might be even better.

    HKCU\.. \Run: [BitTorrent DNA] "C:\Program Files\DNA\btdna.exe"

The tools work fine so long as the user is supported in their use. Addtionally, the user has already done all the things you are suggesting. Although I do feel that CCleaner is a good tool and should be used as a general maintenance tool.

    Thank you Seahwk83.

The computer seems to be running a little faster but a lot of the time when I check task manager it is running at 100%.

    Isn't that bad?

When running at 100%, under memory usage, which items are using the most memory and how much (ex.. 89,000k) or whatever your # may be?

Ahhh I sorted that out now bu re defraging everything. Thank you.

But now the system runs at the right speed but if for instance I am online and I tab down the internet.. (im on firefox) and try to click something on the desktop or another window it takes 5-10 seconds to respond.

And vise versa... when I click back to the internet it slows down again... but other than that it seems to be running a lot better..

The only big programs running are explorer at 50k.. Firefox at 90k and about 5 smaller ones around 20k or less..

Everything would be Ok as far as mem usuage -

See if same thing happens when using IE

Maybe try to uninstall and reinstall Firefox and add your add-ons for Firefox (if you use any) one by one - could be an addon causing something

    Try resetting IE defaults

Tools, internet options, adv tab, click reset defaults on bottom and then restart IE

See if this helps at all
