When watering houseplants should you wet the leaves?

I have recently joined and wish to help.

From experience I have learnt that watering the leaves of indoor plants produces undesirable results.

I am currently growing asters and zinnias from seed.

They have developed discolouration and appear sickly.

I have researched the Readers Digest Complete Guide to :) Indoor Plants and they advise that watering should not be done on leaves except in the case of bromeliad rosettes.

Foliage can become hairy, start to decay or develop unsightly spots.

I know this answer is not very timely. If you have further gardening questions I promise to answer them promptly for you if I know or can find the answer.

Most plants should be bottom watered, especially plants like Gloxina, african violets, most plants with fuzzy leaves, but even Ivy don't appreciate wet leaves. Watering can cause spots, leaves to discolor because of the minerals in tap water. So it's always a good practice to bottom water. Quite often when you have hard water or soften water you should let it sit for at least 24 hours or use distilled water for your plants, and after watering, drain off all excess in the saucers, plants don't like sitting in it, causes root damage.
