How'd you come up with your screename?
Ok, there are a LOT of interesting screen names here on AMHD and I was wondering how you came up with yours. Some are pretty obvious but some are not. Without revealing anything too personal, share how you decided on your AMHD name... :)

Because I can't ever think of anything clever, I use part of my first name and part of my last name.

Well there are two ways of doing something the KISS method and the SWAG method. The SWAG method is a Scientific Wild-A$$ed Guess.

Unfortunately, the simple method is sometimes harder to achieve. A simple, elegant design is really tough.

I've been labeled as a person to create a complex design and simple ones. The complex ones may not be complex at all, but rather easy to troubleshoot.

A simple example, but it costs more. Bear in mind that lives and property were at stake and the system worked in an emergency when the lab exploded.

In an upgrade, I had a fellow PHD Chemist not care whether the wiring looked good. This doesn't help troubleshooting one bit.

I had the same Chemist ask why I could not wire a low voltage light to another panel in another room. I said everything must communicate via contact closures. One panel created a contact closure for the other panel to use. Power for the lamp, then came from the other panel.
Surprisingly, that was not considered simple. The use of a contact closure cost at least 20 extra dollars.

Reliable, simple, elegant and safe are very difficult to integrate together.

I designed a mechanical magnetic electrical probe holder which went through many revisions from proof of concept to a finished in-house use product. Not including electrical, there were 11 parts and 3 tools that had to be made to make the part. It went through various revisions and became a robust product, sometimes hand manipulated 500x per day.

Depending on the application, the design changed somewhat. As failures occurred, fixes were put into place.

On one of the parts, the vendor changed how they manufactured the probe needles and they would not go back to the original method. Fortunately, there was an agreeable method. The problem I was unable to fix with the vendor was high temperature corrosion. They would not fix it on their end because of contamination of their bath, so I had to fix it on mine.

    A very neat experience.

I have actually managed to hold on to this name as an alias since 1996. Been in the diesel-volkswagen game since 1993, if you don't include the fact my mom brought me home from the hospital after I was born, in a brand-spanking new 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit, diesel of course, and the same color of green as baby-food peas. I blame it on her, mostly. It's too easy not to.

My response was originally referrring to the part about the man-made god. Then I went back to read it again (because I thought it was "pure genius") and saw in the lighter shade of grey the other line. I actually laughed out loud. Pretty brilliant. :p

Two men waiting at the Pearly Gates strike up a conversation. "How'd you die?" the first man asks the second. "I froze to death," says the second. "That's awful," says the first man. "How does it feel to freeze to death?" "It's very uncomfortable at first", says the second man. "You get the...
