    Very sick daschund
We are from Michigan, our dog has travelled to Colorado and while seemed
A bit under the weather when leaving has now become very ill. The vet in Colorado has put him on steroids and antibiotics and 12 days into this he is not doing well. He has a high fever, hardly moves (have to carry him outside to go to the bathroom) he doesn't want to eat. The vet is running more blood tests, however to date we have no diagnosis. We are quickly approaching the end of our financial resources. Any suggestions on what we can do to help him or suggestions on possible causes. Thanks Hootonnorth

    Hi,
I am so sorry to read this. The Vet is your best bet at finding the problem. I know that blood tests, with analytical results can be expensive, but they are necessary to determine the cause; seeing if anything is out of balance.
I would hate to guess at anything causing this. The only thing I know to do is to make him comfortable, and keep taking him outside to go to the bathroom.
You can use a long towel, or part of a sheet, wrapping it under its front legs, under the chest, so you can help him stand up to use the bathroom, holding the sheet or towel, as a "sling" above him. I do wish you and he the best, and good luck.

Thank you for the reply, the sheet/towel is an excellent idea. We will put that to use. He had to stay over night at the vet, still no word.

    Hi,
You are welcome. I do hope he will be OK, and I do wish you the best. I used the sheet idea on our housedog, 12 years old, when she got so weak she couldn't get around by herself. She passed away at home, this past Jan. The Vet said possible cancer, with low red blood cell count, and increased size in the spleen. She is really missed.
Please post back when you know the problem. I would like to know, hopefully with good news!

    Care For Animals: Pet Health

Sorry to read that your dog is so sick.

Try the above site to see if you can find anything that will help you understand what's going on.

If you did not do this yet, try re-capping his activity up until he took sick, i.e. what he was eating, where he walked (maybe a strange type of tick got to him). Dangers vary from state to state and only your keen observation can help identify any thing out of the norm. I hope the test results from the Vet reveal something that will identify the problem and reach a cure.

Good luck, and please keep us posted.

You do not mention if he is vomiting. I had this happen to two of my dogs and I used a syringe to feed her chicken broth. Unfortunately one dog had to be put down with distemper, but the other dog had parvo and is a very healthy part of our family.

I hope everything works out okay, it is hard to watch a "family member" go through something like this. My prayers are with you.

I have a dachshund who was very sick, she's been sick since march and she is still recovering, she wasn't eating, vomiting, took so many blood work, the vet couldn't find out what was wrong with her, and I also had to carry her around wherever she wanted to go. I had to take her to see a specialists. Even the specialists couldn't figure out the problem. Try feeding your dog boiled chicken with rice, throw some chicken broth in rice if you want to just try rice. Right now my dog is on steroids and is doing much better. If you're vet doesn't have an answer, try a specialist. My dog had to go through 2 surgeries in one week. Please keep me informed, [email protected]
