    caught shoplifting
    Advice needed
me and wife caught shoplifting at a Retail store a month back
LP took us to office and called police over the phone for record
it was clean, they said we will be released after paperwork
    stuff was valued around $25
    no police came on scene
given a ban of 6 months from store
also a notice of apprhension" criminal summons will be obtained by police later"
not sure what it means, also talks about civil fines possible
will the police contact me, am I charged?
already a month and no correspondance from anywhere...
very worried, I have a clean record...

    Please advise

Where did this happen? What State? Canada?

So far, no, you have not been arrested or charged - it says you will be charged later (criminal summons). If you are arrested and found guilty you can be fined.

Will the store bother when the merchandise was worth $25? I don't know. Did you have to reimburse the store for what you stole or did they approach you with a bill for their "inconvenience?"

I would just sit tight and wait to see what happens next - there is little you can right now, anyway. I would certainly stay away from the store.

So for no you have not been charged, if you are charged you will either be taken to the station to be photo and fingerprinted, or just a ticket given to appear.

Also the LP at a store can not get a cirminal history of you over the phone at least in the US.

    thanks guys
    I reside in Ontario Canada
not sure what they checked with police -record or matched our ID's to there records
but did some paperwork-one notice of apprehension saying criminal summons to be obtained later by police, civil penality and a notice of prohibiting entry to store
also said this is no criminal record and nobody else will see it excepting local police
said you might get slap on wrist from them
It has been a month today no police or bill from them
only store LP arrested me , no police was called or no ticket etc. given
not sure if they will contact me later
    stuff was valued under $25
spoke to some criminal lawyers- 75% of them say no charge otherwise police would have been called
said expect a bill soon though
I am just very scared as we work respectable jobs and don't want a record etc.
I really thank you guys for prompt replies

Normally the police would have came and given you a date, It would be possible to get a notice in the mail, but not likely. Also you will most likely get a notice from the store for a civil penalty they will want.
