    Laptop battery
Have a new laptop. Can anyone tell me the proper way to use the battery wisely. Should it be removed while not in use? Run completely down before recharging etc.

I would first suggest to find the manual for this laptop as the battery instructions can be different.

As a rule, I don't suggest removing the battery at all unless you have a problem.

A lot of people just use their laptops plugged into the mains all the time, its almost like they don't need a battery at all. I would suggest using the laptop on battery mode so that it discharges down to about 20 or 30 percent before re-charging - but I'm not an expert - check with the manual is the best bet.

A laptop battery is much like the rechargeable batteries that we have today. Just like any battery, in your cell phone or what not the first few times you want to drain it completely before charging it. Once you have it plugged in, it should be fine to leave plugged in. The next time you want to use the battery, let it drain all the way, or at least very close. The reason for this is some batteries are notorious for getting a memory and basically it will think your battery is empty when it is not.. I leave my laptop plugged in all the time with the battery except for when I am on the road.. out of my 6 hour life I started with I have about 5 1/2 now.. its what happens to batteries.. it will get less and less.. At that time.. purchase a new battery.

    Hi,
As another suggested, read your manual about the battery. The battery may have some charge on it already. If it's a NiCad battery, you need to completely discharge it before charging it. That will set the batteries "memory" to 0; not charged. Then when you charge it for the first time completely, it will remember to charge completely the next time.
If the battery comes new as only half charged, and you charge it up all the way, the battery will remember the "start charging point" at 50%. Then, the next time you charge it, it will only charge half way.
I hope this makes some sense. But, check with your manual on Battery Charging.
There is no need to remove the battery if not being used.

The best thing to do is to keep charging your laptop and occasionly unplug it until half the battery is used. Keep charging for a week and repeat.
This uasually works with Acer, msi, dell, hp and compaq. Don't try it with viao, e machines and others not mentioned on the first list
