    As stated in the previous post, a particular problem would help explain better. But, you could change from bearings to azimuths. An azimuth is just turned off north right around the circle, instead of being broken up into quadrants like bearings.

    For instance, S35W would be 215 degrees.

    N50E would be 50 degrees.

    N80W would be 280 degrees.

    And so forth.

    I always preferred those over bearings, especially in surveying.
