    Hello,
It seems to me that Windows is facing a hardware problem on your computer.
If you know how to open the system and check the hardware, go ahead, otherwise I advice to take it to a specialist.
    Greetings

Since Windows won't even boot up, your best bet is to boot from the Windows XP installation disc to follow the recommendations above.

You may or may not be able to recover the system, depending on the exact cause of the damage and its effect.

This may be a software problem or a hardware problem.

You may need to go into the system Setup and make sure its set to boot from the CD. As you start to boot there should be a message to press some key to enter the Setup.

You aren't stupid, just inexperienced. However, its hard to give you specific step by step in this case since machines are different.

On most machines when you power on a messsge displays on the screen to press a key to enter setup. The key is listed, but the message and the key to use varies from PC to PC. Once you see that message you need to keep tapping the key indicated until you get to the Setup menu. Once there, you need to explore around the setup pages looking for something similar to boot sequence. This will allow you to select which device is read to look for the boot info. You want this to be at least the CD then hard drive.

Have you tried entering the system setup using the key mentioned during power up?

This is probably a corupt hard drive
    You probably lost all data

The first thind to try is to hit the F8 key at boot and try to get into safe mode
(you have to be able to do this so keep trying there is no set time to hit this key if you hit too early and too many times then the PC might give you a keyboard error if to late then the PC will boot regularly to the same error
The best time is right afer the memory scan is complete and it reads all the hd and cdroms and displayes them on the black screen)

If you can get into safe mode then the hd is OK just reinstall windows or like it says try to download the latest hd drivers which will be in form of bios from the motherboard manufacturer

To boot from cd get into setup. Its either the del key or the F1 key in the beginning of the boot. The arrow will probably point to setup on the screen after you hit it also it should tell you what to hit
(dont wory too much about braking stuff just remember what you changed)
The only thing you change is where to boot from
Then hit F10(probably) for save and exit
You will either hit enter or the right arrow -> key after you navigate to the appropriate screen
Then choose the cd rom as the first option
This will alow you to boot from certin xp cds if you have more than 1 try them all

I have never recovered safely from a reocuring error like this
The eisiest backup is an external haddrive I sugest you invest in one
