    Helpdesk Interview Technical Questions
    I have an interview with a well know company. The position is Helpdesk. What type of technical questions will they ask me?

    Well one of the first things they might ask is how well you can read instructions. Evidenced by where you initially posted this question, the answer is not very well. I wonder why you ignored the bold, red Read Me first warning and continued to post there.

    As to what else they may ask, it depends on what you will be helping with.

    One of my sons worked at a telecommunications help desk for four years. He picked up calls from all over the world, so he had to first be able to understand a variety of accents and possibly new English speakers. He had to be able to correctly understand the question, what the caller needed to know. He then was to use good keywords to search in the company's database for an answer to the question. Finally, with patience and kindness, he was to convey the information to the caller and help him understand how to solve his work problem.

    A friend was at a help desk for a major cheese company. She too had to be able to understand the questions that were called in, search the company's database, and provide helpful answers.

    The company requirement for both of the above was that the help desk person had to use company information, and could not offer a personal solution.

    Interview Questions
    ScottGem assist me about interviewing tips dealing with technical. I have an interview at the Pentagon, D.C. the position is "Senior Computer Technical Support Analyst" can you assist on the type of technical questions they may asked?

    Again this depends on what you will be supporting. Will you be supporting network stuff or application support or all the above.

    Its really impossible for me to say what they will ask, the possibilities are so many. Frankly if you are applying for such positions, you should be able to answer most questions they ask. Obviously they will want to gauge your knowledge so they will ask a broad slate of questions.

    Technical Questions
    If I input information in the wrong screen please forgive me. I'm trying to get help while I'm at work. If you can understand that. I appreicate any and all help on tips for technical interview questions. I can and do follow instructions carefully.

    I have to say this. If you don't know how to work a simple Bulletin Board system like this one, then I doubt if you will get these jobs you are applying for.

    You need to keep your posts within this thread (unless you start a totally new question). So you want to post your answers here not start a new question. As to following instructions. You seem to be ignoring the instructions you have received.

    Having spent almost 30 years in the basement of the Pentagon, let me see if I can put you at ease a little. You most likely will be given an opportunity to discuss you experience and knowledge. Give brief and succinate descriptions with only enough detail to show your knowledge. Chances are that the person conducting the interview is a management type and won't understand. Keep in mind that the interviewer has read your resume, or whatever SF form they are using these days, and has some idea of your qualifications. The systems used there will in great likelihood be different than the ones you are experienced with anyway. If there is a technical type in room be prepared for the obscure technical question. It is designed to show you how much he knows, not to find out what you know.

    Be calm and confidant.

    And remember that they don't call the Pentagon the "Puzzle Palace" for nothing.

    Every interviewer is different and like Mr. Stroud stated, it depends on if there is a technical person attending the first interview session (and there will be at least two or more).

    The questions I ask during interviews are designed to tell me if what you have put on your resume is truthful or not. So I am going to ask you questions about what you claim to know and to what depth your knowledge is. There is a difference in knowing about something and actually knowing something.

    As a potential canditate, you structure your resume with your best points geared towards the job requirements. You won't mention the Mac experience so much if you are going for a Windows type job. In this respect, you can shape the interview before it even happens. You start by showing your strengths and when questioned on these strenghts, you won't have to worry about the answers.

    If you are trying to lie your way into a job, then forget it. Otherwise, don't sweat the small stuff.

    Considering the date this was posted I'm sure that you've already had your interview. All the same for future readers who are interested in this. I've had several interviews of this nature and the questions have ranged from very basic, to more advanced.

    Example: What is the difference between RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 5? Maybe even something as trivial as what does RAID stand for?

    But, as it's already been stated here it will depend on who is interviewing. Is it just a hiring manager? Or is it a Help Desk manager?

    As you can tell just by the name, a hiring manager is not always a Tech person depending on the size of the company the hiring manager may be just a member of the HR dept. Not to consfuse the fact they have no technical knowledge. Just may not be as in depth as the help desk manager. Now the help desk manager may be there if the company does more like board style interviews in which you can expect more pointed questions.
