Hi,

I got a 8 weeks old shih tzu. I work long hours so I plan to potty train him indoor. I use newspaper in the crate and he pees on it, but when I let him out, he won't do it but instead he pees on the carpet. Sometimes when I caught him when he need to go, so I put him on the paper he just went off and did it on the carpet. Should I use the pad instead?

Leaving an 8 week old 8-10 hours a day isn't good. Can you find anybody to give him a mid day break? Neighbor, professional dog walker, etc.

The pads are supposed to be scented to attract the puppy. They also help control odors. The pad can be used in place of the spot in my outdoor oriented system. You may have done better to have adopted a dog at least a year old if it has to be alone all day.

Much of housebreaking is not training the puppy, but making it easier for your
Puppy, you, and your carpet while its body to catches up to its instincts. At
Around 8 weeks when the puppy goes to its new home, the time from when it
Realizes it has to go, and when it can't wait any longer is a matter of

I have done a search on the net and I am amazed at how many web sites there are that do not include many of these basics. In addition to housebreaking 14 puppies since 1991, I started with instructions from the best. Too many of the instructions emphasize schedules. Schedules may be Ok when the puppy is older, but the key to housebreaking a puppy is reading it, and having it at its spot when it needs to relieve itself.

1st you should never put paper in your crate the crate should be small enough for him to turn in they are never supposed to pee where they sleep he should be let out every 1 to 2 hrs if you work all day these are not the puppy to have if you can not do the proper training

Very true! Especially for a Shih Tzu, I have two and once they make the connection they are the best at letting their owners know they have to go!
