Sometimes they use a gun... sometimes they use a needle.

I suggest cleaning it often, but don't overdo it as you can potentially irritate the skin.

The piercing shop should have given you some disinfecting solution and instructions.

Some use guns, some use needles. It is recommended to clean the piercing twice a day.

How long have you had it periced? It usually takes 4 months to a year to heal.

Haha well that answers your question about it not coming out. It needs to heal before you take it out, or change the earring. Do you still want it peirced?

I was just thinking about how the people long ago did it with a sharp bone or thorn of some type... I've seen a guy do it with a paper clip too... just to show off...

Also of the time my sister went to have her ears done... the beginner that tried to do it, didn't take the plastic shield off the needle in the gun...

My sister waited another 10 years or more before she tried again!

Thanks for your post. You made me think of a few things I haven't thought of in years!

Back in the day, they would put an unclosed ring by your ear, in the doorway, and then slam the door shut.

He did it in about 10 seconds before a class. Pushed it right through and pulled it back out. It bled just a little bit.

Never thought of him quite the same way after that! At least you have the option to let yours grow closed if you decide not to keep it...

    Best luck whatever you decide.

It can be done both with a gun and a needle, but the suggested method for piercing cartilage is the needle. The needle is more sterile, and has less harmful affects on your cartilage itself. Since you've already had it done with the gun, I guess there's not much more to say about it. :p

To answer your second question, yes, cleaning it too much is bad. Overcleaning interrupts the healing process, and since cartilage piercings can take up to a year to heal anyway, you really don't want to interrupt that process. Clean it twice a day for the first week that you have it, then reduce cleaning to once a day, not more than that. Overcleaning also causes irritation, which can lead to infection. Clean it with plain old antibacterial soap and warm water, that's it.

    Good luck! :)

I understand how you can be paranoid, a lot of people are about their piercings. Most people think "the more I clean it, the better", but that is actually not true.

It'll heal up nice just as long as you keep taking care of it and not neglecting it or cleaning it too much. :)
