Do you mean what some call "denominations"? If so, the answer varies from source to source. Most agree to at least several thousand.

While every denomination emphasizes something different, they all claim to adhere to the bible and to follow the teachings of Christ. Going to church(any church) does not make you a christian any more than sitting in a henhouse makes you a chicken. True believers are those born of the spirit and have the spirit of the living God inside them. They come from all denominations and backgrounds and make up the church or "ekklesia"(where we get the word Ecclesias) which means called out ones. 2 of these "called out ones" from different backgrounds on different sides of the world can, in five minutes, establish a deeper rapport than with an unsaved sibling they've grown up with.

There is only one type of Christianity. Being a Christian, literally means being a follower of Christ. I totally agree with Homesell, and what he said about a true believer. I couldn't have said it better.
