What are the risks of harvesting fat from one’s own body?
I am a 35 year old woman. I have fairly deep naso-labial lines. A doctor told me the only real way to get rid of them would be by an injection of fat or some filler.

I have read that liposuction carries risks like the risk of nerve damage etc. I know only a small amount of fat would be taken from my buttocks to inject into my face.

But what would be the risk of this kind of fat harvesting? When I asked the doctor why everyone doesn’t choose to have their own fat injected instead of fillers, he said harvesting from ones own body is an invasive procedure.

So I assume it carries some risks. Can you please tell me what they are? Thank you.

Risks are extremely minimal. You may have some bruising secondary to rupture of capillaries (tiny blood vessels), but that will subside with time. The biggest risk would be having an indentation or dimple where the fat is taken. Unless you are young and like wearing a bikini or have a significant other that you would not want to see the dimple, then it iconcern you, if not, it isn't a big issue. It is obviously an invasive technique when they penetrate your tissue. Overall, for the small amount you are talking about, I would recommend it because that way you will look better, be happier with your appearance and not have any concerns about tissue rejection as would be the case if they used someone else's fat.

    Hi
Thanks for your reply. So there is absolutely no possibility of nerve damage if some fat is harvested?

I also have lines around the eyes, a few slight ones on the forehead and some acne pits and scars that the doctor said could be filled in by fat injections. If I were go to in for a full face treatment, would the amount of fat that would be needed still be small enough to be not very risky? Again, is there any possibility of nerve damage when some more fat is harvested?

Also, in your experience, how long do these fat injections last? I live in India, which is a sunny place but I always wear a hat when I go out, whether its sunny or not. I work from home and seldom go out in the sun anyway. So if I get these fat injections, how long do you think it will be before I start getting nasolabial lines again, given the fact I do protect my skin well from the sun?

And is there any possibility the fat injections could turn out a disaster and make my face look swollen or puffy or lopsided or something? Could the fat get reabsorbed by some other part of the face and pool there, making that bit look lumpy?

    Thanks a lot!
