    5n+6 = -4

    You want to get the constants on one side.
    In this case, subtract 6 from both side of the eqn.
    5n+6-6 = -4-6 --> 5n = -10

    Now you need n by itself, so you divide both sides by 5.

    n = -10/5 and simplify n = -2

    Plug n back into original eqn:

    5(-2)+6 ?= -4 and the answer is yes, so n =-2 is the correct answer

    5n+6=-4
    ___4 __4 (add 4 to both sides)
    5n+10=0

    5n=-10
    n=-2

    -10 = -10
