The only thing I can think of is that after trying to open by pressing ctl, alt, del, you then tried to 'open' the file again at the same time and did no give your PC enough time to work on opening it. You might have to try and use the help, recover utility, and recover system files to an earlier date to get your task manager back, as it sounds currupted. Just wait a wile, there are other experts here who will pick up on this soon today and might be able to help you with a more quick fix. Good Luck.

I got the same problem
I have the same problem and so do many people it seams as I found lots of forums all saying the same thing, well I have got round this problem once or twice by installing the new macromeadia 8 pro, because when it installs it closes all running programes. So are problem must be something is blocking the task manager from opening I just don't know what it is. As I have no idea when the problem started.

After having this problem myself, I chose to override it with another, since it (windows version) does not give me much information and/or power. Got this one for free and am using it for the past 5 months. Since then, my task manager has not acted up either. Try Program Checker, you can get it directly from www.programchecker.com. Anything is worth a try. Good Luck.

For some reason, that's exactly what happened. But I will do further research and ask some friends on my other computerforum and get some advice there. Try it if you want more power over the programs that are running in the background. I also lets you send in 'undefined' lists and updates their database, so it can't hurt. You might not need to use the task manager once you have this one. I never use my task manager again, but it it there to use.. Maybe the installation of the new program did something with the system files to update the *.dlls and made it work. Good Luck.

But Chery why this programchecker always ask me for updates, when I answered yes another ask for update appears while the first updating isn't done yet, and when I answered it yes again, another ask for update comes again and so on... why is this a sign for a virus because it ask so many update and fill up my screen...

It apparently has stopped now, or you would not have had time to get to this forum. The reason could be that when you install a program that, it is busy looking for all the applications you have installed and what all the associated files belong to. The program you downloaded did not have all this new info, and needed to download winXP updates so that it recognized them. You should now use an antispyware program and run it to make sure that nothing else came through the 'back door'. I should be back by tomorrow evening, have to get a check up at the doctor's, then will be back online. Keep me posted. P.S. you will also have to restart your computer. Have a good evening... I'll also pass this on to my other friends and we'll come up with something for you..

Hey guys good news for me, I hope yours too... my task manager is back I don't know if it is because the anti spy that I'm using or its just automatically cured but my guess is its because of the xoftspy... think this prog is though try it (note: you'll just have to use it regularly and don't forget to update it)...
And,thanks to my friend Chery... :D...
