My 8 week old peekapoo bites during play time
My boyfriend and I recently got a peekapoo. She is 8 weeks old and brings us lots of joy, but I think when she plays she is too rough sometimes. Im not sure if it is because she is teething, but she bites a lot when people play with her. I don't think she understands that it hurts. How do I get her to stop biting while people play with her?

You are right, its because she is teething and they are sharp little teeth ! Get her a play toy to pull. I used to use small cold carrots. Veggies are good for a dog and my five week old walker hound would love them, celery sticks, whatever, cold is best because it soothes their gums while teeth come in.

Please ignore the above post, none of the advice is any good.

You let the puppy know it is hurting you the same way a litter mate would, yelp.

Young Labs, which I know best, and other puppies tend to very bad about
Biting. You see a litter of them, and all the ones that are awake are biting
Another one or themselves. I am not even sure they realize that when they are
Alone, if they quit biting, they would quit being bitten. At 3 to 4 months
They are getting their adult teeth, and it seems they spend every waking
Moment biting or chewing. One thing you can do at that stage is to knot and wet a piece of cloth. Then freeze it. The cooling will soothe the gums. Only let the puppy have it when you are there to watch it. I maintain a Lab's favorite chew toy is another
Lab. Otherwise they settle for any person they can. They keep hoping to find
One that won't yelp and jerk their hand away, or growl "Bad dog." and clamp
Their mouth shut. Then offer a chew toy. They keep trying despite hundreds
Of corrections. Another good technique is to yelp and quit playing and go away. Be
Sure to praise them when they are playing nice and not biting.

You just have to keep on correcting them, hundreds of times, not dozens.
Provide sturdy, safe toys such as Kongs and Nylabones. Avoid things they can
Chew pieces off and choke on them. Keep them away from electrical cords.
Crates are essential for most young Labs and other dogs.

The pet stores are full of toys that many dogs will quickly chew up into
Pieces they could choke on or cause intestinal blockages. If you are not
There to watch, stick to sturdy stuff such as Nylabones and Kongs. Keep a
Close eye on chew toys and quickly discard anything that is coming apart in
Pieces. Rawhide is especially bad because it swells after being swallowed.
These problems are the worst with, but not limited to, large, aggressive
    Chewers such as Labs.

5 week olds belong with their mother and litter mates. Did you mean 5 month old?

Never give raw carrots to a dog. They stimulate the production of insulin.

labman, what a terrible terrible thing to say publicly that my advice is no good. You should be ashamed of yourself. You could have written me privately to say that. Why do you think you are the end all and be all of dog advice. My dogs never suffered from eating carrots.

I will never recommend your advice again because of your uncalled for comments. I have had enough of your insults.

Yes I could tell you privately that carrots aren't good for dogs, but everyone that reads your post needs to know. Wrong answers can hurt dogs.

Thank you for the advice, Mollie ( my puppy) has plenty of toys that we bought at the pet store, and she enjoys playing with them, its just like I said when we play with her she bites us, and I believe that she doesn't even know it. She also has a habit of chewing on toes, which is kind of funny, but can sometimes hurt. When me or my boyfriend walk around the room she chases our feet and tries to bite them. Im sure this is just a stage that we are going to have to just be repetitive in telling her no and deal with it. THank you!! :)

Apparently, labman, your opinion of carrots not being good for dogs isn't shared by a few dog experts on other sites, here is one in particular:

    Can Dogs be Fed Carrots?

    Weekly Expert Pet Advice
With Dr. James Glover, Resident Expert

    Question
My 15 week old Westie loves raw carrots, are they OK for her? Are any other vegetables suitable for her? At the moment we feed her on Pedigree complete and fresh cooked chicken. I would prefer to give her a raw carrot as a change from a chew /dog biscuit. Thanks in anticipation. (Brett McCormick, UK)

    Answer

It is an excellent idea to supplement your dog's diet with fresh vegetables, and especially in substitution for a chew. Many dogs like carrots, and there is nothing harmful about providing the odd raw carrot. Their diet, as in humans, should consist of a lot of different things in moderation. Your dog can eat any vegetables that humans eat, provided that they are in moderation. A little left over vegetables from the family meal the night before are an excellent addition to your dog's meal.

As I have said before, there is an incredible amount of disinformation about dogs put up on the net by kooks with an agenda. This is part of the reason I give reddies for people suggesting doing a search for answer to dog questions. If you don't know the answer to a question, you may not be competent to judge the answers you find. If you want to debate carrots, start a new thread.
