    A little about the job:

Positions Cashiers and supports them by expediting price checks, approving Point of Sale Transactions and markdowns. Provides first level of escalation for customer issues. Assists in the supervision, coaching and training of other Front End Associates by participating in the training of new Cashiers and utilizing all available tools to coach and develop other Cashiers. Ensures that policies and procedures are followed to minimize shrink. Each associate has the responsibility of providing a safe working and shopping environment by following all safety policies & standards, completing specified safety training, immediately correcting hazards & unsafe conditions or reporting conditions to the Manager On Duty, and working safely as not to endanger themselves, co-workers, vendors, or customers.

    Cashier #1

A transfer from another store (same retailer) who been with the company for almost 2 years, and has been working in your store for almost a year. He knows cash system, returns system, and some special services system. He is still a student. Sometimes, he doesn't show up for his shifts without even calling the store, and some times, he calls in sick. He is friendly, provides good customer service, but some times leaves his cash register to provide the service.

    Cashier #2

A transfer from another store (same retailer) who been with the company for almost 2 years, and has been working in your store for about a month. He is a special services associate, but he also can do cash and returns. He is always on time so far. The guy is responsible, nice and polite. He provides an excellent customer service. He is still a student.

    Cashier #3

Hired by your store about 5 months ago. She is familiar with the cash system, and beginner with the returns system. She is always on time but sometimes call in sick. She is nice, and smile to everyone. She provides friendly customer service. She is a front-end supervisor at a grocery store. She is still a student.

    Cashier #4

Hired by your store 3 years ago. He knows cash system, returns system, and beginner with special services system. He has a diploma in accounting and degree in programming. He is always on time, and never called in sick. He helped your store in different occasions such as their annual inventory count. He also helped in your store deliveries department as a products collector. He has a previous work experience as a HR manager but in another country. He can be a little bit too serious.

Isn't this homework? Which one are you?

Why would a head cashier be only part time?

No, this is not a homework. I am #4. It's part-time because it is winter and there is no enough hours due to no enough sales. Plus, there are 3 full-timers in addition to the front-end supervisor, and 2 part-timers.

Someone moved it. I put it under HR originally.

I can't answer who fulfills the job description the best because I will be biased to myself. I just wanted peoples opinion.

It might be the time for me to resign if I didn't get this job.

From what I experienced from this company is that whenever I apply for something they send me somewhere else, and hire someone else for the job. This time, they offered to send me somewhere else, but I declined and told them head-cashier is what I want considering that a position was posted.

Where would they send you? to another store? to do what?

If you are truly #4, you are over qualified to be head cashier. They may realize that and want you to be in a place where there are more appropriate advancement possibilities.

For example, I applied for head-cashier 2 times , but I was still new to the company, so they let me down. My third time, they sent me to deliveries in-which I had to go allover the store and pick-up items (very heavy), prepare them on pallets/in lifts to be shipped, and load them on our delivery truck. I spent 4 months in this department. I completed product knowledge courses for all departments and learned about different products and their locations in our store. I got the forklift license. I learned the special orders system to be able to printout pickup lists for the products to be delivered. And of course, they hired someone else for the head-cashier position.

Fourth time, I applied for head cash position I never heard back.

Also, I applied for special services position so I can at least get more training for the special services in order to be prepared to be a head-cashier. They hired 1 part-time and another full-time candidates. I ended helping in the end-of-year inventory count for a month. I had to count dusty stuff that has been on the overheads for years. By the end of each day, I go home can't breath. Later, I went back on cash.

Now, I applied for this head-cashier position. As usual, they offered me another job which includes lifting, dealing with dust, etc... but I let them down and told them that head-cash is what I want.

I start feeling that it is the time to hand-in my 2-week notice and leave.

Sorry for the confusion, but this sounded a lot like a homework question by the way you wrote it. It is back under Human Resources.

In this store, since I got hired (3-years ago) there was 4 different store managers, 3 different operation assistant managers, and I had 2 different supervisors. Head office in the district keep shifting them around to different stores. I had my current supervisor for about 3 months now. He is new to our store and city, and when I asked him the answer was he don't really know. He didn't look at my file yet.

One of the other departments supervisors offered me a ride home once, but he really wanted to talk to me about me in the store. He was wondering about where I am standing now in the store. He thought that I am at least full-time now. He said that he thinks that I am ready for the next level after I told him that I finished school and all the things I done for the store.

I would ask my current supervisor to please check my file and honestly tell me why I'm always being overlooked. This information will very possibly be important if you resign and get another job. You don't want to take bad habits or incorrect behavior to a new job.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why someone with a degree in programming and accounting is working as a cashier for 3 years?

However the answer is whomever they feel is a better person....and as much as you might try to be objective....when you are one of the four....the fact is you can't be.

They base their choices on how THEY view everyones qualifications...and how they view their enthusiasm for the job. And they might not see them the same way you do.

I honestly can't see how someone so overeducated and out of field could be actually enthusiastic to be a plain cashier.... I for example MIGHT be able to do it to pay the bills....if I had to.....but I can guarantee you I would not be happy doing it. And no matter how much I may try to pretend otherwise....its going to show through.

Never quit a job until you have a solid job offer in writing from another employer, not a promising offer, not a verbal offer , but one in writing. That's rule #1 in the workplace. Its a HUGE mistake quitting any job if you don't know where you will be next. Quitting 99.999% of the time will disqualify you from unemployment benefits. I would say 100% of the time... except I've actually done it. But I had very special and very extenuating circumstances ( and I only did it after winning a court case appealing the rejection) and don't know anyone else that ever has.

It is my understanding that there are many, many folks with all types of degrees working outside their educational specialty.
I have done a lot of interviewing but never formed any real impression(s) until meeting and talking with the candidates.
Hypothetically, maybe in an interview you come across as uncooperative, headstrong, any number of indications.
Not saying that you have any of those traits but we have no way to know from here.
Also, the company has no direct knowledge of your supervisory skills and possibly the "bit too serious" makes the company anticipate that you will unreasonably strict, and cause them employee problems and turnover.
The short answer is that I would never select anyone based on a just a written summary/resume and that is all we have here to evaluate. Your opinions of your own talents are worth no more to us than a reference that you would provide, and they are always of limited value. Here, in my opinion, is not the place to have your skills assessed.
