Drug Test Worries for Future Employment (Not a User)
I am worried about an upcoming drug test scheduled for about 3-6 weeks from now. I have never smoked and avoid those who are smoking/using as much as possible. Just over 1 week ago I was in a small living room while about 6 people smoked marijuana. I wasn't watching them so I don't know how much they smoked but they were smoking for no more than 30 minutes. Multiple times they blew weed smoke in/around my face... I tried not to breath it in. I was very uncomfortable with the entire situation and looking back should have left as soon as they began smoking.

I have a drug test scheduled for sometime within the next 3-6 weeks and don't know whether it's a urine test or hair follicle test. Should I be concerned about failing the test? I am incredibly anxious about the entire situation and can't believe I allowed myself to be exposed to other people smoking. I have never consumed illegal drugs in my life but don't know how second hand marijuana smoke is shown on hair follicle tests. After leaving the house I had a headache and (although I have no idea what it feels like to be high, and it was probably all in my mind) swore that lights seemed very bright.

Can anyone tell me what I should expect or what I am in for? The drug test is for an opportunity that I have been working over a year for and I wish I would have connected the dots between second hand smoke and my upcoming drug test before it was an issue.

I really appreciate any input anyone has.

    Thank you.

It's highly unlikely you would test positive in a urine test and impossible for it to show up on a hair drug test. A hair drug test is meant to show consistent use over time. I wouldn't worry about any drug tests if I were you.

Agreed, I don't think you should be worried, except for those "contact" highs. The smell of marijuana is so pungent though I don't know how you missed it.

    Try to relax though.

Thank you for the replies. talaniman could you elaborate on "contact highs" for me? Do you know what it would feel like or if that would show up in any sort of test results?

    I really appreciate it.

I would have course worry, about why you were in a room full of drug users, you do know, if police had come in, you would have been charged along with everyone.

There can be some contamination due to contact and inhaling 2nd hand smoke.
In enough content you can also become "high" from a high concentration of that smoke. Reason why masks are worn when officials burn it.

If it was only this once, you should pass, the hair testing, and after 5 or 6 weeks should be good on the urine also. The 3 should be OK, if it was a lower level.

You have to understand, issues of the potency of the drug (they differ greatly) The true amount smoked, and the actual smoke not inhaled but given off by the drug of others

Back in the "day" it was hilarious to us smokers when the non smokers got as buzzed as we were just from inhaling our second hand smoke. Don't let anyone tell you different, as this does still happen, and children are more susceptible than adults. Contact highs are not limited to just pot either as crack (cocaine) and meth in smokeable forms are also given to this second hand high effect on non users, and over time has been known to lead to experimenting by non users. You can never know when that "just trying it to see what all the fuss is about" can lead to trying again, and again. It's a matter of situation and circumstance.

Imagine if you will, you enjoyed YOUR contact experience without a headache. While no one can predict who becomes an addict, or why, the chances increase greatly if you hang around the user crowd, and get caught up in their insanity, by accident or choice, and even though you had a headache reaction this time it's more likely than not you will not the next time.

Why even take that chance of having your hopes and dreams shattered by a POSSIBLE bad decision? You may as well start practicing the skill of knowing when to avoid, and remove yourself from those situations. I challenge you to read the posts in this ADDICTIONS forum of such situations of others already caught up in the system, and the stress and worry and consequences that bad decisions have wrecked on their lives. Better yet look around at the group you were just with. Bet one or more has PROBLEMS, or ISSUES tied to being a user!

Yes it DOES happen, and to think it cannot happen to you would be quite foolish. Until they change the laws, I strongly advise you to stay within them, and enjoy your other options and opportunities that being drug free can bring you. Don't exchange the chance for your dream job/life for a temporary feel good that may bring dire consequences, stress and worry later and it is that simple.

So is making a decision to stay away from the user crowd and not have to worry and stress about failing a drug test because as has been said such incidental contact is to small to detect or fail you. Relax and be happy but be careful too in the future.

Thank you for the advice. I was unaware that being in the same room as people smoking could result in a contact high; I didn't know about the legal repercussions either. It's something I had never been exposed to before and will avoid it in the future at all costs. I've seen peers struggle with addiction. I avoid consumption of substances (including alcohol) at all costs, so thank you for the information. It's a relief to hear that I'm (probably) in the clear for my upcoming test. I will learn from this mistake.

That's what life is about, learning from mistakes and making good decisions when faced with choices and FACTS. We all make mistakes, it's what we do about them that matters.

Now you have more facts to make a good decision BEFORE you make that mistake... AGAIN!

I wish you luck and happiness in whatever you decide to do with your life.
