    Hi tamjhorner

I have concrete over existing slab and it seems fine. Been down about 10 yrs.

It is 3 inches thick with wire mesh in it.

Be sure to remove carpet and adhesive used to hold carpet down.

    Good luck

You can but have you considered what to do with all your door jams and other fixtures in the home including transitions to other rooms?

There is an overlay concrete product that you can use but I just acid etch the concrete and either stain it or prime it with concrete bonding primer and faux paint it. I seal it with a few coats of water based poly and then apply a few coats of ZEP high trafiic floor finish.
I am doing a concrete floor right now to resemble mahogany wood floors.
