    Web design, in MS Word?
Hello all, I once read that it was possible to create a website on MS word, I managed to create the web site but had problems putting it onto the net. When I tried this a message said, "the operation had timed out". What am I doing wrong? Please help, as you can probabily tell by my post I don't know much about computers.

Yes, MS Word will work "in a pinch" for making webpages.

The timeout is a connection problem, not likely a problem with the webpages themselves.

What are you using to upload?

    Hi,

Never used word to create a website. I presume you have saved as HTML?

I would be inclined to use WSFTP (www.wsftp.com) or some other such software to upload the HTML files to your website provider.

Make sure you have the userid and password from your provider.

I'm trying to use a 'file transfer'. I did subscribe to a 'web host' but that didn't work either. I have done a website before in MS Frontpage but that was when I was at school and I don't have that software at home.

Are you doing the "file transfer to web host" within MS Word?

Generally, it sounds as if you just need to confirm that your transfer settings (host name, folder name, username and password) are correct.

Another option for you is to open a Yahoo account and use Geocities to make a web page. You can use their built-in Pagebuilder software to easily build a very basic web site.

    More info here: http://geocities.yahoo.com/v/pb.html

I would also like to put you off using MS Word for creating web pages - it's just not built for it. Some other alternatives are:

    http://www.nvu.com/ (free)
    http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/ (30 day free trial)
    http://www.w3.org/Amaya/Amaya.html (free)

If you know HTML, try these:

    http://www.chami.com/html-kit/ (free)

Lets start by explaining how this all works so you can understand the advice being given. A WEB site is a collection of files that are stored on a web server somewhere. These files comprise HTML and other image files. There may also be other types of files to provide interaction and animation.

The main type of file is HTML, which stands for HyperText Markup Language. This is just a way to tag text so it can be viewed graphically through a WEB Browser (like Internet Explorer). Other types of files used in web sites are accessories to provide other types of functionality to the site.

Word can save documents as HTML files. So you can create a document in Word, then use File>Save As and save in HTML format. The next step is to upload the HTML files and any accessory files to the WEB server. How you do this depends on the WEB host service that manages the WEB server. Generally this is done using a protocol called FTP.

What's not clear from your posts is whether you have a WEB server or host to upload the files to. If you are trying to use Word to "publish" the WEB pages, you need to have the FTP information for the server. Or you can just save the page as HTML and upload that saved page using whatever tools the host recommends.

By the way, Word is not the best choice as a WEB site or even page authoring tool. If you use images, it will create the links locally on your hard drive and you will need to manually recode the links once the files are uploaded.

There are any number of better tools, some freeware, to use for authoring web pages.
