AVG is a very good program, but it's user interface is well... completely dismol, it looks like a standard Win 98 interface that's been painted a darker shade of gray. I prefer Avast! It looks very nice and scares the hell out of you when it's found a virus.

I think AVG is the best free antivirus, but you can download AVAST which is also free...

If you're in the UK, and have a natwest bank account with online banking, you can get norton free for a year by logging into your account, when you log out again, there is an offer for it on the offers page they always put there when you sign out. I don't know if the offer is still there but it was a month ago.

This version of norton is very sleek, includes their firewall and other features. Very impressed with this version compared to the old versions I had.

And to think I don't really use the account :)

    Hey Monkey,
Norton + XP = Big Steaming Pile.
Admittedly it's free, but I'd like something that works properly and isn't bloat ware ;)

No seriously, the previous versions of norton I will agree were friggen awful. But they've really pulled something out of nowhere, this version is much sleeker and much better.

I am very happy with Comodo Antivirus that you can find a link to at Free Internet Security Software. I have used it with a variety of other free security software products (such as Comodo Firewall) with great results! :)

Kaspersky isn't free. The question was for free antivirus recommendations. AVG and avast! are a couple of proven products and as I mentioned previously Comodo is a great new product. PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition is also worth a look. Here is a link to a short article about free antivirus software.

I used Avast for about 2 years with great results. At least on XP machines. I have not heard how it works on Vista.
