undefinedundefined I replaced the igniter on my gas dryer as it was crumbling anyway. That was my first thought as to why my dryer may not be heating up. Guess what, that wasn't the problem. The dryer just quit heating all of the sudden and as I said I thought the igniter may be the problem. As we all know it's quite costly to have a repairman come out to your house when it might be something simple that I might be able to fix myself. Any ideas as to what to check next? Thanks... Steve

If the gas comes on and goes off quickly, check the flame detector circuit. Otherwise, check to see if you have power to the gas valve. If you do, and it doesn't open, it is bad. If not, work you way back through the limit switches and other controls. One of them may have failed.

I came across the niftiest gadget for trouble shooting, a voltage detector. They work through the insulation of wires. There are several brands. I have a GB Instruments GVD-505A, less than $15 at Home Depot. Touch it to a hot wire, and the end glows red. Find the doodad that lights it on one side, and not the other, and you have the culprit.

Labman- you are absolutely right when you say the GB Voltage Dector Instrument is nifty, but that's an understatement. Whenever you work around the house, and want to know for certain that the power is off, check it before you turn it off and then again with the voltage detector after you THINK it's off, and get positive affirmation. For the price, anyone that is even thinking of "Doing It Yourself" with electricity would be well advised to add this to their tool box, no doubt. I may have gone a little off topic, but I love this tool!
