Hi Everyone ---
Years ago I posted this thread, and got some great advice.
https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/plumbing/cracked-cast-iron-pipe-107834.html
The summary is I cracked a 1969-vintage 4"...

Just to update this (I was the original asker) -- these furnaces are old, but the heat exchangers are fine, and actually have no perforations.
If you look at the pics, they look pretty bad. But...
-
Yeah, I fixed this long, long ago.
For the record (in another thread, I think) the actual, real-best solution was to stick a 24" pipe wrench on that plug, attach about a 4' section of 2" square...
-
Well, thanks for the answers...
I can tell you it wasn't the sync... these carbs only have one external adjustment, and that appears to be the idle mixture. Since the are CV (constant...
-
The title about sums it up... I've got this 2000 Honda Ace Shadow Deluxe, which is a 750 twin-cruiser, with a pair of Keihin 36mm carbs on it.
The history is not good (it's my sis's bike)
It...

Good call!
Actually, I have made that mistake several times, but not this time... I was pretty careful to bleed some out of my gauge set first, and I store the set under nominal pressure. Also,...

Hello all!
I've got an Amana side-by-side that apparently lost it's charge, somehow, very slowly.
I called a service guy out to diagnose it, and he told me probably a very small leak in it...
-
Thanks for the help!
The relay isn't chattering, and the 24v seems to be all good.
In fact, I've discovered the problem... I took it all apart (nothing to lose) and found a burnt solder...
-
That sounds like a good idea to me, and in fact you could possibly take a step further and run the new return-air duct direct to the top of the stove or even to a stove-pipe heat exchanger for...
-
Hey everyone...
I have the above primary control on the Beckett AFII 85 burner on my furnace. It appears to be bad... there is 120V supply to it, and it will buzz when the furnace is on, but...
-
Hey everyone... First off, thanks for the great advice.
Here's the follow-up. The heat exchanger is fine. What I saw (and freaked out about) was the usual thin, flaky rust-stuff that comes...
-
Thanks again...
I hope that AC coils dripping on the heat ex are not cause for a not-under-warranty finding... The AC works just fine, all summer long, I would think a freon leak would shortly...
-
Thanks HVAC1000!
That pic with the rusted-through panel, does that not indicate a bad heat exchanger?
How is one tested? My assumption was that if it has a hole in it, it will leak combustion...
-
Hey everyone.
I have a pair of the furnaces mentioned above. There are two capped pipes under the panel which the technician removes to vacuum out the heat exchanger (I think it's the heat ex?)

It comes with pre-applied sticky sealant already... you only need to use RTV if you're reusing it and the original seal is gone.
I doubt the color matters much... what I happened to have on hand...
-
Heya..
I've tried those Fluidmaster seals, but if it's the one with the big O-ring and the crush cardboard spacer, I wouldn't bother... I personally have never had good luck with them.
The...

No no no!
You've got it all wrong!
This is a safety-interlock device to ensure that you (at least pretend to) wash your hands!
:) :)

Well, the folks on epinions mention that my LG came with a sink-connect, but I don't remember one.
LG WM-3677HW Front Load All-in-One Washer / Dryer Reviews at Epinions.com
I've seen them before,...
-
Sorry Tom, I think you're a little off on this one..
What I think he's referring to is a front-loading, all-in-one washer/dryer combo unit...
I have one made by LG, and it's pretty...

WD-40 is good, there's stuff called PB-Blaster that's significantly better.
Either way, keep sprayin and prayin... it will come out eventually.
BEFORE you apply major (like, possibly...
-
Well, obviously it's hard to give very specific advice in a situation like this, but...
The best thing I can say is don't be scared to tackle it yourself. I had a similar thing (cracked cast...

You won't have a pressure problem with 3/8" line, you'll have a volume or flow problem.
3/8" is considered undersized for just about everything more than a drinking fountain... are you sure the...
-
If you're renting in an apartment building, this probably shouldn't be your problem... the building owner/manager needs to call a plumber at no cost to you.
On the other hand, I could understand...
-
It sounds like you've got a "closet bend" (the part the toilet connects to) in PVC which is connected to the bell-end of old-style bell-and-spigot cast iron using one of the "donuts" that replace a...
-
Since you'll be putting a bathtub in there anyhow, it shouldn't be too much trouble to just bust up the concrete and put the drains were you need them. This is not as hard or traumatic as it seems.....
-
The "glue" is really a powerful solvent... it actually melts the PVC plastic.
I don't know if it'll leak when you try to reuse the fitting, but is it worth the couple of bucks to risk it? How...
-
There is a way, but it may not be economically reasonable...
It's the Fernco Pipe Patch, and if you search on YouTube you'll see some very excellent videos... it can do amazing stuff.
...

Thanks!
I don't mean the joists (or even the studs), since I can run the line vertical all the way up to the attic...
I'm worried about the sole-plate and head-plate (is that what it's...

I'm not a licensed plumber, but I've been reading codes lately for my own, similar project.
Your idea to "vent" the bathroom group back into the line out to the septic tank won't work.
The...
-
So, being that I know more about plumbing than framing at this point (which should indicate just how little I know about framing... ) is it safe to bore what amounts to a 2" hole (for 1-1/2" pipe)...
-
Heya folks...
What is the minimum practical vent size? I know most codes call for no smaller than 1.5", but what's the real minimum? It's just air.....
I'm (eventually....) putting in a...
-
Good idea, this is always easier!
Are you sure? There should always be a valve in the cold line just before the water heater, but there should also be a main (whole-house) shutoff... Trace...
-
I'm not a plumber, and I don't know about the codes... but I would say yes, I would want them.
Of course, valves are no use if they're behind a finished wall, as shower plumbing so often is...
...
-
Sounds like maybe you need to snake your main line...
You haven't mentioned if you're on city or septic (hope city sewer if you're putting spaghetti down the drain!) but you can probably snake it...
-
Ha! This has honestly made my week... Thanks!
Well, good. Then I'll assume that you've done your research and have installed a fuel return line after the pressure regulator, as you surely...
-
Looks like it might be OK, to me.. but I'm not a plumber. Normally the flange rests on TOP of the finished floor surface, including the tiling.
Do you still have the piece that you cut out of...
-
Generally you don't un-solder... you cut it out and solder new pieces in, or use compression fittings.
There is probably a kit at your local Home Depot (or equiv) for exactly this.
Have a peek...
-
I would still do the toilet-paper test before you call someone, and also check/tighten the clamp where the dishwasher drains.
Metal pipes are most likely brass, yes.
-
What material is the pipe made of? If it's white plastic, it's PVC and that would be best for you...
Does the U-shaped section (yes, the trap) have any large nuts on it? IE, is there a part...
-
Not to be too harsh here but...
I strongly suggest you get your stuff together with regard to fuel lines! Braided hoses may look nice and all, but they won't help your car go faster, and they...

Or one of these...

First off, I'm NOT a plumber (tho I've set a few toilets) and codes can be different in your locale.
Here, there is no requirement to caulk around the base of the toilet, though some folks will do...
-
If the pressure is fine at the tank, obviously there is a restriction after that...
Check the valves? Has any work been done recently? Sometimes the whole-house valve or post-filter valve does...
-
Take the lid off the tank, and see what's stuck. Unstick it.
-
Sounds to me like a partial blockage, allowing some flow but not enough to allow the siphon action that causes the "suck" to occur. This blockage could be in the toilet itself, at the wax ring or...
-
Yeah, you'll have to do some soldering...
Here's what you do..
1) learn to sweat solder. It's not that hard, and the books at home depot have good instructions. You'd be best off to buy a...
-
Honestly, I have no idea if that seems right... I think around here the labor is around $100/hour, but you certainly could ask your plumber.
Unless there's something unusual, replacing the...
-
Do you mean 1/4 turn FULL port ball valves?
As far as I know, all 1/4 ball valves are "full port" meaning that there is no restriction in pipe diameter when they're open...
It sounds like a...
-
I'm not a plumber, and therefore not terribly familiar with codes, but I don't think you can put the p-trap within the wall... it has to be "accessible" at least, I think.
