I had that same problem. I just installed windows again. Maybe your computer is missing a file, like a dll, or exe, or a system file. Just save all your work to a cd and install windows again.

First of all, I installed win xp on 2 to 3 computers with my cd. The serial number has no problem. It works fine!! And second of all, you don't have to activate it over the net. Get win xp service...
