Did you set it as the default playback device? Right click on the sound icon in the bottom right of your taskbar (next to where the clock is) and click on playback devices (not recording devices)....

Exactly... can you boot into safe mode? With most computers you press F8 or F10 or del right after you turn on the computer - you should get a menu normally asking you.
