You can install it (ubuntu) in a folder on your Win partition. It will just install a bootloader which points to the folder. This way you get a fully working OS.

Take the battery out of the laptop for a minute or two then reinsert it and it should be fine. Sometimes computers freeze if you push the standby/hybernate button :D
