What's happening here is when you flush the toilet the plug of water that goes down the pipe is pulling or syphoning the water from your tub trap, if the trap is empty the odours will release...

It still sounds to me as if there is an iron fitting being used somewhere along the line. When the tap is not used the iron oxide builds up and when it is used it flushes the deposits away.

Here in the UK air in heating systems is a common occurrence.
Much of the time it is not in fact air but a build up of Hydrgen gas.
This is caused by having dissimilar metals in the system I.E....
