I'm trying to set the timing and it shows to put the #4 cylinder top dead on the compression stroke.how do I tell when I'm on the compression stroke?

I recently replaced the o-rings on my kitchen faucet. What's the best lubricant to use on them? I've tried vaseline and grease but neither one lasted very long.
