You need to figure out who the plan administartor is. Here are some web sites that may help:

    Pension Search: Find Missing Participant
    Find your pension plan (PBGC.gov)

Look at your quarterly statement. Or call the 401(k) plan administrator - their contact information should be on your statement, or you can ask your HR department how to contact them.

You can find out about your 401k here by providing your ssn. I also read that you can apply for your credit history and it will show your 401K on your credit history. Not sure if the credit history works or not though.

You should beable to get that info from your quarterly statements (if you've kept them). Or if the plans provide on-line access to your accounts you may be able to get this information there. Or you can look through your end-of year pay statements to see what had been deducted from your wages each year.

My daughter is in a coma. I know she had a 401k from her job. They called me about it 3 years ago but since I didn't have guardianship over her yet, they couldn't speak to me. I forgot about it and now social security needs for me to find out about it. How do I go about finding it? I spoke to her former boss and he said he didn't have a 401k so he had no idea about it. Please help. Thank you!

Call the HR department at the company she used to work for and ask about it. Or if you remember who the "they" were that called you 3 years ago try calling them back. Finally your daughter should be receiving quarterly statements from the plan administartor - so watch the mail.

What about if we never get quarterly statements at all. We know we have 401k out there from previous jobs but... don't have the first clue about how to locate them. We tried the various sites listed so far without luck. Any ideas?? Tried calling former employers. But no luck there either.

Look at the quarterly or annual statement the 401(k) plan administrator sends you. Or call them.

If you have lost all your old statements or don't know who the plan administrator is, talk to the HR department at work to find out who the administrator is.
