I have a CSA 5 dollar bill from 1864. It is in a bill case with a sticker that states: "A. Lincoln note found in Lincolns pocket at his death. Dark Red Choice Unc. XOE. On the back of the bill there is a small brown stain. Does it have worth? How do I authenticate it?

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Here is some additional information:

First on the back side: There are four number 5's each on a corner. The word, five is on the top border as well as the bottom border with a much larger "five" in the center. Someone wrote on the bottom (seems not of this era): CK.56.3218 There is a brown stain on the back that is darker brown at one end and lighter at the other. It is irregular in shape and about 3/4 inch in length.

The Front: On the right side of the bill is the word "five" written sideways from bottom to top. The same side has the words Lithog.by Evans and Cogswell. The number of the bill is handwritten in a blackish-brown ink with the number 8000 handwritten. All of the handwritten words are quite eloquent. There is a large picture of a building with Roman columns (7 in number) and there are 2 stories to the building. Various shrubbery and trees are also in the picture. Above the picture in very small print is the following: Two years after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States. Next to the picture (vertically) is "series 6" and then perpendicular to this smaller print is a much larger "B". Centered in the front is "The Confederate States America; below is: will pay to bearer Five Dollars. Next line is another "The Confederate States America; below is: will pay to bearer Five Dollars. Next line is another " Richmond, 5; February 17, 1864.

In the corner under the Registor's signature is the number 29; the Registor's handwritten name appears to be a C or G and the last name looks like Penisky. On the bottom border between the Registor's and Treasurer's name are the words: engraved by Kealinge & Ball, SC. The treasurer's name is darker and it appears to be Maemarde. Please understand that the cursive is quite fancy and difficult to determine exactly what the names are.

On the right side upper corner (as I look at it) is the number 5 in the center of a somewhat paisley design. Below is a picture of someone who looks like Jefferson Davis. There is a lot of small detail surrounding the picture.

That is about all I can tell you about the money. I did buy it from a retired teacher in SC who said her husband was a collector who died. She didn't want to keep it any more and decided to sell it. I never paid much attention to the details until I took it to work and some of the veterans (I work at a VA hospital) were in awe of it.

I just would like to know if it has any value other than being just a Confederate collectible. I do appreciate all of the information you share with me. I am grateful of your interest in this bill. Also, I do have a couple of other Confederate bills and one Federal fractional bill.

ELAINE1219 - THank you for the quick return on the answers. IM not sure of the one I'm looking at in my book. IN 1864 all currency was dated "FEB,1864" . I may need a few days to check it out more, this is the first time I ever heard that a confederate note was found in " LINCOLN'S pocket after his death".
