Cold Air Registers Blowing Cold Air
Our cold air registers are blowing cold air worse than if the windows were open. The hot air registers blow cold air but not as forceful (maybe because they are 1/3 the size of the returns) This only happens when the furnace is off and we are heating with the wood stoves. We have metal ducting in the basement, our furnace is a Heil forced air using LP and is about 15 years old. Our first floor is the problem area. The second floor has a wood stove but only two registers, one in each of two of the three bedrooms. No cold air returns upstairs.

This is the first year we have noticed this problem and have been burning the wood stoves for over 20 years. Other than closing off the returns what else could we do? Closing or coverning the registers seems to help BUT we have to remember to clear them before we go to bed, the fires are usually still burning and we end up pumping cold air in again.

    Anybody else have this problem?

It sounds like your duct work has came apart. You will have to visually inspect it to find the problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will get the flashlight and start looking.

When you use a wood stove that is vented to the out side of the house it carries lots of air out of the house and it has to be replaced from some where, it can be coming down the furnace vent or the water heater vent or both. Plus the fresh air vents in your roof can let the replacement air in and then it can come into the house through any hole that you have in your ceiling, like the hole around your furnace and water heater vents. This also happens when people use their fireplace, you have to have a place for makeup air somewhere. It is possible that you have a duct that has come apart and the makeup air is coming down the broken duct.
