Is it true that air can only be compressed to a certain extent?
It depends on a lot of variables. Gas laws come into play, physical restraints such as bursting points of tanks, pumps etc. If you cool and compress air enough, it would separate into liquid Nitrogen, Oxygen, CO2, water and other materials.
