I want to know if there is anything I can do to stop people being ignorant on cell phones.

I work in retail and I am constantly having people come up to the cash already on their phone and totally ignore me while I ring in their purchases or they ask me a question and then answer their phone while I am answering them. Sometimes they will walk around our relatively quiet store and have loud personal or business conversations involving foul language. Once I was told off by a woman for interrupting her conversation when I didn't even realize she was on the phone because the ear bud was hidden under her long hair.

I would love to tell these people off but I am afraid that my spineless company will not back me up. Customer is always right and all that garbage.

Any suggestions?

If you only work there and there is no policy in place... then you just deal with it. Nothing you can do.

I used to work retail, and this happens all the time. I just ignore them, like they're ignoring me, ring in their purchases, and then interrupt them to tell them the total so they can pay (because there's always a lineup at the register).

The fact is, there are no laws about using cell phones in public. It's everyone's right. Yes, it's rude, but being rude isn't against the law. If you say something you risk being fired, so it all depends on how much you value your job.

It is not your place to tell them anything, you are just a worker, and at a company staff meeting you can ask if your store has policy on it. But normally you have to put up with it. And ignore them doing this.
