    Passport application Green Card holder
I have a friend who arrived in the US as a refugee from Somalia. He now has a green card and wishes to apply for a passport. Can he apply for a US passort?

If he has a green card, then he is a permanent resident, not a US citizen, so he cannot apply for a US passport. As a permanent resident, he can work in the US, and travel internationally and re-enter the US.

After he has been a permanent resident for five years (see his green card for date of approval), and he has been in the US for at least half that time (30 of 60 months), is a person of good moral character (paid taxes, no significant criminal history) and can pass the written government and history exam, and meet the English fluency and literacy requirement--he will be scheduled for a swearing in ceremony, and then will be a US citizen and can apply for a US passport!

A hint, your friend can actually apply for citizenship at 4 years and 9 months. There are a lot of resources online for citizenship. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!
