HR: Who is the toilet police?
I manage a team of programmers. I got an email from HR notifying me that after 2 of my programmers moved to a different floor of the building, other staff started complaining of "human waste" being left on the toilet seat. I was instructed to talk to my employees. Is this my job as the IT manger? It's definitely not in my formal job description. It seems like HR should take care of this or the facility manger (same person in this case).

Since we don't have cameras in the bathroom, there's really no proof of the culprit. Besides, I don't want to take my relationship here with my programmers.

Might have to put a lock on, and only those who are supposed to use it are allowed to get the key from you. Might be a temporary cure. Keep a list of who had the key last. Surely, the person who complains will be putting the blame on the guy who used the toilet last. That may put an end to the problem and things can go back to normal and the lock can remain unlocked.

You are their Manager... things like this come down the management chain, top to bottom. That's why it IS your problem.

Quick group meeting should deal with it quickly. And shame the lazy slob that grew up in the barnyard into using the flush lever. Whichever one it might be.

I agree with Smoothy. This is part of being a manager. While its true that in some organizations this would be a function for HR, unless its specifically spelled out that HR handles these things, managing a team of people does mean some HR functionality.

Since the Facility manager has delegated this responsibility to you, then you are required to perform it.

Job description or not, your relationship with disgusted programmers that follow these miscreants will be damaged severely. A key to the bathroom, or a camera OUTSIDE of it are effective, along with a notice such behavior will not be tolerated. You could issue the culprits a warning that they have been reported for disgusting behavior.

You were given the assignment so do it, whether you feel it beneath you or NOT.
