Currently have Media Player 6.4 What is the safest one to upgrade to for a PC with Win98 second edition on it? Also what is best site (without adware, spyware, etc included with your download) to obtain the update from?

Just use the Windows Update choice on your Start menu or go to www.windowsupdate.com. Let the site scan your system for any updates it needs. I would make sure I had all the critical updates, any of the others you can choose for yourself. If you are unsure about any, ask us.

I also use Win98SE; and found the Windows Media Player specifically for Win98SE. I would not advise going to Windows Update to let it scan; UNLESS you are very, very careful which version of WMP you download! If it simply shows Windows Media Player 9, DO NOT download it.

There is a version of WMP for Win98SE; and later versions DO NOT work; take my word for it; been there, done that... crashed my computer.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com, then in the search area, type in Windows Media Player Win98SE. click on Go.

It willl find the version you need, and it's called WMP for Win98SE.
It's Version 9.00.00.2980.

I use to use the same old version you have, but this newer one is great.

However, its my experience that the Windows Update site detects what version of Windows you have and only offers updates for that version. I don't have access to a Win 98SE machine to test this, but I know that when I go there I only get updates for my version. I don't know what Fred experienced, but I have to question that it was due to downloading the wrong version from Windows Updates.

Another issue is that, if you still have such an older version, you may not have been getting your critical updates. So you really should go to Windows Updates and get those.

If you go to Windows Update using Win98SE; it will show WMP to download. If you are using the older 6.4 version of WMP, it will show the wrong version!!
Since the other volunteer "expert" doesn't have experience in this area, he has forgotten how badly Windows Update sometimes treats Win98SE.
Also, I would not suggest using ALL the Windows Update security patches for Win98SE. Be very careful what you download, especially the IE and Outlook Express security patches. I, and others using Win98SE, have had bad experiences from these patches.
If you wish to "try your luck", please do; but be advised of what can happen.

Unlike another volunteer here, I will make it clear when I'm talking from experience or what the basis of my advice is. I've made it clear that I no longer have access to a Win 98SE machine to test. So I do agree that you should be careful in reading the descriptions before you accept any updates. If in doubt don't accept and ask. If, at the time Fred upgraded his WMP, the wrong version was offered, then I would think its been corrected by now. The ONLY way to state conclusively that it is still offering the wrong version is to use Windows Update on a Win 98SE machine that does not have the current version.

I will also state that, while I was using Win 98SE I did keep up to date with my updates and never once had a problem with any update marked critical.

I use XP,and have sometimes had Windows Media Player display live streaming media in an annoying shade of green,or even upside down!! Apparently that is due to a fault in Media Player 10,which I'm assured by Microsoft they are working on the problem right now.No change there then.The link below applies to different versions of Media Player.You might find it useful.It is the Microsoft support page for versions 9-10,and earlier releases.

Might not apply to 98SE,but it might be worth a look.
