Just married living in 2 states.
My wife and I were married in 2006.

In 2006 she worked and lived in NJ and I worked and lived in NY.

I am very confused about filing our taxes jointly... Are we supposed to say that we were resident of NY and NJ, and how do we avoid getting taxed twice by both states...

If anyone has any input on this topic please help... Thanks!

Boy, your state returns would be a real challenge even for a pro.

Where were you living AFTER you got married?

Well... we were living in NJ a couple of months before the marriage and we still live there now, but I never officially changed my residency (I still had a NY drivers license... I just actually got my NJ license this weekend)

When you move in with your spouse, you changed residency. The license was merely a formality.

You would file as a part-year resident of both state. Your wife files as a full-time resident in NJ. If you file jointly in NJ, it would be a part-year return.

NJ will tax only for the time you lived in NJ while working in NY. They will also give you a credit for the NY tax paid while working in NY and living in NJ.

You can file jointly in NY but NOT have to report your wife' NJ-based salary.
