How would the networking stack be reset? Was getting error 193 with wlan, mccss, and threadorder, is that related? There is no install disk, or backup.

More details would be helpful, like your operating system for a start.

Try running the network troubleshooter. Right-click on the wifi symbol, select "Troubleshoot problems". This might get you some more info to help.
    Good luck,

Thanks Wally. Unfortunately, it's been run several times and doesn't have any solution, just says the service is not running. I've searched for solutions everywhere, tried quite a few things, nothing works. Have had problems ever since a Windows update was interrupted earlier this year. Any ideas?

At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem:
    1. Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
    2. Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter.
    3. Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
    4. Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.

    Woohooooo curlyben...a real answer

Is there a WiFi switch? Often on the front edge of laptop.

Updates can be rolled back, touchy subject though.

Here is a good write up on this issue:
